This category honors overall excellence in print magazine photography. The category recognizes the use of photography, including photo-illustration, to fulfill the editorial mission of the magazine. Judges will evaluate entries based on the quality and consistency of the photography; on its ambition and originality; and on the inventiveness and skill with which photography, including photo research, are used throughout the magazine to inform and entertain readers. An entry consists of three print issues of the magazine.

Judges will evaluate entries based on the strength and consistency of the magazine making and the editors' success in serving the interests of their readers.
Entries will be judged on the merits of the submission and not on the presence or absence of print or digital content in the submission. Print-only entries consist of three print issues, which may include one special-interest or newsstand-only publication.
Digital-only entries consist
of any combination of websites, tablet editions, smartphone apps and examples of social media. Monetary/Material Award Details
National Magazine Award winners receive certificates of recognition and an award , referred to as “Ellies,” which are reproductions of an Alexander Calder stabile.
Eligibility Requirements
Any eligible print magazine may submit one entry in Photography. Entries may include one issue dated December 2013/January 2014. Content entered in this category can also be submitted in other categories.
All consumer and business magazines edited and published in the United States, including digital-only publications,
are invited to enter the National Magazine Awards
Only the chief editor of an eligible magazine may enter her or his publication in the National Magazine Awards. Other
magazine personnel, including writers and photographers as well as former editors, may not submit entries without
the knowledge and approval of the chief editor. The administrators of the National Magazine Awards reserve the right to determine if a print or digital publication qualifies for entry.

Entry Fee Details
• $295 for members of ASME
• $395 for
nonmembers
Required Material
(1) four copies of each of three print issues; (2) a CD or DVD containing PDFs of each issue (advertisements need not be included); and (3) a separate file on the same CD or DVD containing PDFs of the cover, the table of contents and, if published, the editorial masthead and the letter from the editor from each issue.
Entry Format
All entries must be submitted online at magazine.org/nma. Entry forms and step-by-step
instructions are posted on the website. Entries that originally appeared in print require the submission of both print magazines and CDs or DVDs containing PDFs of the entry as it was printed in the magazine. PDFs should be converted to a single file in correct page order
before submission (entire print issues should be submitted as one PDF, not as one PDF per page).
Advertisements need not be included. Pages in editorial spreads should be shown together. Low-resolution files are preferable.
Multiple entries may be submitted on a single CD or DVD. Print magazines and CDs or DVDs should be mailed to National Magazine Awards, ASME, 810 Seventh Avenue, 24th Floor, New York, NY 10019, or delivered to the 810 Seventh Avenue Messenger Center on 52nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway. Deliveries are accepted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please follow the directions at magazine.org/nma for the labeling and packaging of print magazines and CDs or DVDs.
