About the Award

All entrants in the Real Estae Journalism Competition are eligible for the awards listed below:

•PLATINUM AWARD $1,000 Best Overall Individual Entry
(Judges choose from categories 1-15 submitted by individual- als and any single bylined work in categories 16, 17 and 18.)
• PRESIDENT’S AWARD $500 Best Freelance Collection
(For journalists not on staff but whose work is published in bona fide media outlets. Entrant must request that the paid entry being submitted in categories 1-25 also be considered for this award. Entrant must submit two additional pieces of work in any medium at no additional charge.
• RUTH RYON AWARD $250
• Best Young Journalist
(If entrant is 30 years or younger, entrant must request that the paid entry in any category from 1-18 also be considered for this award at no additional charge.)

GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE AWARDS
Cash awards of $250 will be awarded for the top entrant in each of the 25 categories. Gold, Silver and Bronze winners (including each listed team member) will receive award certificates and complimentary admission to the full NAREE Journalism Conference in Houston, Texas, June 11-14. Judges may also award Honorable Mentions. Those honorees will also receive certificates and complimentary admission to the NAREE conference in Houston. A special Awards Day Program will highlight the NAREE conference’s mix of rich educational and story gathering opportunities. All winners will be notified in early May so they can make advance travel arrangements to attend either the full NAREE Conference in June 2014 or the Awards Day Program headquartered at the Westin Oaks Hotel in Houston.
• Those unable to attend will receive their awards by mail after the awards ceremony.
• A media release naming all award winners will be posted to NAREE Web site,www.naree.org after the awards presentation.

Notable Winners

Jury

The competition is slated to be judged by journalism faculty of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
Judges will be the sole arbiters of the awards. Judges may choose not to bestow an award in a particular category.
Judges will consider criteria appropriate to the category including, but not limited to:
• CLARITY OF WRITING
• OBJECTIVITY
• ORIGINALITY DEPTH OF REPORTING
• DESIGN (IF APPLICABLE)

"Best Section," "Best Magazine," "Best Web site," and “Best Newsletter” entries also will be judged on
overall graphics presentation and use of graphic elements to help communicate the message to the readers.

Eligibility Requirements

• Entrantsmustbejournalists-bothNAREEactivemembersand non members - working for independent news outlets. These include newspapers, magazines, Web sites, broadcast programs and newsletters with editorial content not affiliated with, nor subject to, the policies or review of trade associations, special interest groups, and/or advertising/marketing departments.
• The work entered must have been published, posted, or aired between Jan. 1, 2013 and Dec. 31, 2013.
• Competition entry forms must be postmarked or submitted online before March 1, 2014. Mailed entries must be received by March 5.
• An entrant may submit only one (1) entry per category, but may enter as many categories as he or she chooses after determining eligibility. Competition judges reserve the right to decide if an entry is in the proper category, and to move those they determine need reassignment as well as not to make awards in a particular category. NAREE also reserves the right to cancel a category if fewer than five (5) entries are received in the category. (Entry fee will be refunded if category is canceled, and entry cannot be reassigned.) No work will be returned.
• Writers may enter their own work in any category. An entry entered in any of the individual categories may also be used as one of the three entries in the best collection of work category.
• Editors may enter their own individually bylined work in any Indi- visual Category and editors may enter the work of their staff writers in any Team Award Categories (20-25) under their own membership or processing fee. But editors may not enter category 19, "Best Team Report," unless they have a byline on the report. At least one bylined team member must be a NAREE member or pay the processing fee to enter work in the "Best Team Report” category. Editors also may not use their own membership or processing fee to enter the work of their staffers in the Individual Categories (1-18).

Entry Fee Details

First entry is free. Second entry and each additional entry is $25 each. Non members - $75 processing fee for the first entry. Second entry and each additional entry is $25 each. Processing fee may be applied to membership dues by checking the appropriate box on the entry form.
If one payment is submitted for numerous entries, an itemized tally sheet is required.

Required Material

CATEGORY INSTRUCTIONS
Categories 1, 2, 14, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25: Submit three links or three copies. Must include three work samples to be judged.
Category 14: Best Blog or Category 25: Best Web site Entry If possible include a URL and password for access to view three blogs or three different days of the Website. Judging criteria will include editorial content, design, and ease of use. Include the Blog URL or Web address on the summary sheet and application.
Category 16: Best Breaking News Report The entry must represent an immediate response to a news event. For a single story or packages include initial social media, online, broadcast or print coverage and subsequent development of the story. Submissions must indicate how the writer(s) showed enterprise in obtaining and developing the news, and how the report(s) had an impact on real estate markets locally or nationally.
Category 17: Best Investigative Report or Investigative Series (Submit Full Package) Individuals or a team of reporters should submit all parts of the report or series and explain how the writer(s) showed enterprise and how the work had an impact on the community or real estate Industry.
Categories 18 and 19 Include all parts of series -- at least two parts up to five parts.

Entry Format

• ENTRY FORM Each line must be completed on the form. (Entry may be disqualified if lines are skipped.)
• SUMMARY Attach a brief summary (no more than 150 words) describing the intended audience for the publication, Web site or broadcast. Explain why the entry serves the target audience, what is original about the story idea/content, why the reporting is innovative, and if applicable, how a creative risk was taken. If social media was used, please explain why it was significant.
• ENTRY Original tear sheet or photocopy of newspaper and/or magazine article(s), printout of online report, CDs, DVDs and Flash Drives with protective cases are permitted for videos & audios. The publication, webcast or broadcast standard outcue (SOC) name and date must be visible on originals and copies of submissions. Paper clip entry fee to completed entry form and staple entry form to upper left-hand corner of entry.
Do not put entries in binders with plastic sleeves. Do not mount articles on cardboard. Send entries in 9" by 12" envelopes if possible.
• SPECIAL PACKING REQUIREMENTS - Large Volume Entries Put entries - that may not fit into an envelope - into their own box.
I If submitting 3 samples for an entry, staple the entry form on top of the pack. Use one envelope or shipping box if possible.
• WINNERS Winning entries will be displayed at the awards ceremony at the NAREE Spring Conference. No entries will be returned.
