The Communications team at Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an Editorial/Journalism Intern to help research and edit the content we publish on the Wikimedia blog and social media, so we can better serve the communities who create Wikipedia and its sister projects.

You will be joining a group of dedicated and passionate people responsible for communicating important news and information for the world’s largest communities. We’re looking for someone who is talented, passionate about our mission, and driven to change the world.


Your primary services and deliverables will be to communicate daily news and information to our communities and stakeholders, as well as to the general public. In the process, you will research, write and edit a wide range of stories about the Wikimedia movement and the foundation.


Desired Skills and Experience: 2+ years of professional high-volume, deadline-driven blogging, or relevant online media experience Superior and proven writing, editing and reporting skills Experience writing for the web, targeting broad and diverse audiences Ability to turn out a developed, factually accurate, short post in under an hour Ability to follow many different communication channels at once Intermediate understanding of WordPress Internet savvy, with experience using a wide range of social media tools An eagerness to learn, particularly around online communities and techNology Critical thinking skills and the ability to act effectively with high-level direction Passion for open source, free kNowledge, and transparency is a must (please tell us more about these interests in your cover letter) Pluses: Involvement or experience within Wikimedia communities Other languages – especially German, French, or Spanish KNowledge of online community interaction and dynamics HTML/CSS and video editing Bachelor degree


Key responsibilities include: Write clear and concise content for a variety of campaigns Prepare and post campaign messages in a range of channels Review and edit community submissions to the blog Propose, create, and assign fresh and intriguing blog posts on a daily basis Curate editorial calendar with communications team Experiment with new types of content (e.g. how-to’s, Wikipedia highlights) Collaborate closely and publicly with Wikimedia contributors Respond to community feedback and update content as needed Coordinate with staff to ensure 24/7 on-call coverage (as part of team rotation)
