Summary This is a full-time fall internship opportunity that will provide an educational experience to a candidate who is interested in the writing, reporting, and production of short form news stories, blog posts, photo galleries, and other daily digital media for NationalGeographic.com.

Requirements

Minimum Education Required Junior or Senior undergraduate or graduate student looking for full-time internship; journalism or related major. Minimum Years and Type of Experience Must have story clips from college newspaper or professional news media organizations. KNowledge and Skills Required Excellent writing, editing and research abilities; sound news judgment and strong attention to detail; basic kNowledge of WordPress or other content management systems and a desire to expand skill journalism set. Training in science is Not a must, but interest in science news is, and experience in reporting and writing science news is a plus. Supervision None. Responsibility percentages may vary depending on business needs.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities 1. Learn how to report and write news stories and other content, including captions for photo galleries, under tight deadline pressures. (35%) 2. Learn how to produce and publish stories and other content under tight deadline pressures. (35%) 3. With the guidance of experienced reporters, develop pitches for short, newsy stories in National Geographic’s core content areas, including animals and evolution; space and techNology and paleontology; human health, neuroscience and behavior; environment and climate. (10%) 4. Learn how news editors monitor news and new scientific research to tell important, compelling stories. (10%) 5. Learn about broader National Geographic Society, with opportunities to meet staff and attend presentations across various departments, including research and exploration, National Geographic Magazine, and other media platforms. (10%)
